Recommendations

For the WELL Building Standard to be accepted as beneficial to businesses, there is a necessity for more hard data. Post-occupancy data regarding employee satisfaction, collaboration, innovation, work quality, health, etc., is necessary for WELL to truly achieve its goal. Without this information, the standard is still just a theory with no evidence to support it. In order to prove the true benefits of WELL, there is a strong need for a standardized set of analytics from each certified project, based on real post-occupancy data.

To collect a standardized set of analytics for each WELL project requires the use of pre and post occupancy data collection. To do so in the most efficient way, the use of a survey, utilizing a mixed methodology of qualitative and quantitative data is recommended. This survey should be issued to all employees within six months prior to the building’s certification, followed by quarterly issuance of the same survey post-certification. The survey will ask questions, mostly based off of a likert scaling system, that correspond to the seven concepts behind the WELL Building Standard (air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, mind). The same questions will be asked during the pre and post-occupancy surveys, along with an additional 11 questions that will be added to the post-occupancy survey, to gain insight and feedback on the certification process itself.

Another recommendation for WELL projects is to consider the use of implementing FitBits, or Apple watches, or any device of this kind, to track the physical activity of employees. This could be an optional program for employees who wish to partake and track their physical activity to report back to management for the use of post occupancy data. Similar to the surveys, these FitBits, or device of choice, should be provided to voluntary employees at least six months prior to the certification. This allows the data collected to be compared to the data collected post-certification, to determine whether the program has truly increased the physical activity and wellbeing of occupants.
